Position Description
The APW Print Intern position offers a rare opportunity for someone who is passionate about original prints and contemporary Australian art and is interested in pursuing a career (as a print curator or scholar; or a collections manager or registrar; or archivist) to gain valuable ‘hands-on’ experience in Australia’s leading professional print studio and gallery.
1. ROLE IDENTIFICATION:
Position Title: APW Print Intern
- Term: Fixed term 12-month contract
- Part-time / 4 days a week (.8 EFT)
- Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 9am-5pm (30 hours a week)
- Location: 210 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne. (On-site only).
- Stipend: $50,400 per annum plus SG superannuation (fulltime equivalent of $63,000 per annum)
- Responsible to: APW CEO / Artistic Director
Special Features: This role may include some lifting and manual work required for the installation of exhibitions. Some occasional weekend and evening work may be required (time-off-in-lieu applies for all pre-approved out-of-hours work).
2. ROLE OBJECTIVE
The APW Print Intern’s training and development will be realised through:
- Assisting with the APW Digitisation Project,
- Assisting with the APW Gallery Operations & Exhibitions Programs as required.
- Assisting with the APW Educational Programs
- Providing exceptional customer service and communication to all APW stakeholders.
3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with the research and cataloguing of the APW Print Collection of workshop proofs, including accurate data entry in APW’s EMU catalogue system.
- Assist with the preparation of print edition documentation records for all works produced by artists in collaboration with APW printers, as required.
- Assist with the preparation of APW Exhibitions and artwork displays including assisting with the presentation and framing of artworks, research and preparation of exhibition wall labels, exhibition installation and invigilation of exhibitions, as required.
- Assist with the presentation of APW Education Program public programs including gallery and print studio tours, as required.
- Assist in the production of monthly, quarterly, and end-of-year reports as required.
- Undertake special projects, research and other duties as directed.
4. ACCOUNTABILITY:
The APW Print Intern is responsible for:
- The quality and timeliness of advice to the APW CEO / Artistic Director of matters within the incumbent’s areas of responsibility.
5. EXTENT OF AUTHORITY:
- This position functions with a degree of autonomy within the parameters of this Position Description.
- The incumbent may be responsible for producing routine correspondence, documents and reports.
6. JUDGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING:
- The incumbent will be expected to prioritise work schedules and objectives in order to achieve the desired outcomes to meet deadlines.
- The incumbent will be expected to act and make decisions within established APW codes of professional conduct.
7. SPECIALIST SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
The following would be advantageous:
- Demonstrated interest in original prints and/or contemporary printmaking.
- Knowledge of printmaking techniques and methods.
- Knowledge of contemporary Australian art and artists.
- Broad knowledge of the principles of cataloguing collections and/or archiving records.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workloads.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to be flexible and work with changing priorities to meet deadlines without jeopardising standards or levels of service.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a small team, as well as independently.
8. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The following would be advantageous:
- Qualifications gained in Art History, Arts Management and/or Curatorship, Collections Management, Fine Arts, or Visual Arts (preferably majoring in printmaking).
- Some experience in identifying original prints and/or handling works on paper.
- Current workplace first-aid qualifications.
- A valid ‘Working with Children Check’.

The appointment carries a three-month probationary period.
