Etching #1: Hard Ground & Soft Ground

This two-day course covers traditional etching techniques that artists have employed for centuries.

Participants will learn how the ‘old masters’ made their marks on copper plates using hard ground and soft ground techniques and will be able to explore and experiment with different mark marking, drawing, and printing methods.

The course covers plate preparation and the application of grounds, plate processing, and paper preparation. Participants will learn the correct use of an etching press and registration techniques to print their own original print.

For the entire two-day duration of the course, APW will provide all materials needed (including inks, copper plates, paper, printing materials etc). All participants will be able to create an image up to 12cm x 18cm in size. Please bring with you to the course any any ideas, sketches, drawings, photos, etc that may assist you in articulating and developing your image.
