This two-day course will explore the bold and graphic nature of relief printing and the fundamentals of printing two-colour, multi-block linocuts to create multi-colour prints. Participants will be shown how to prepare blocks, carving techniques, ink preparation and rolling techniques, and registration methods. Enter the fascinating world of this traditional printmaking medium used for making contemporary images.
The Multi-block method requires a different block to be made for each colour. Firstly, the key block is carved. From the key block, a trace or copy is made to provide a guide for carving specific colour regions onto another block. When printing, each block is inked and printed sequentially to fit together in registration with the key block printed last. Participants will learn how to print by hand as well as using a variety of printing presses to produce original fine art prints.
APW will provide all materials needed (including inks, lino blocks, paper, printing materials etc). Participants will create a two-colour image up to a maximum of 12cm x 18cm in size and we recommend bringing along image ideas, sketches, drawings, photos, etc that are relevant to the graphic nature of the medium
